‘Naked in Death’

Hard-bitten yet vulnerable, Eve Dallas is a New York police detective some 100 years from now. Unfortunately she falls victim to a wholly traditional romantic cliche in coming up against mysterious attractive billionaire, Roarke. Murder suspect and detective fall passionately in love and Eve's defences are slowly melted. I was very put off by the unoriginality of both the plot and style of this structure, yet it is worth persevering with Naked in Death. The future setting becomes more and more compelling as the enigmas surrounding the filmed murder of prostitutes proliferate. Indeed the power of the book lies in the evocation of a socially changed America in which prostitution is legal and guns are not. Of course the thriller manages to have it both ways in the pursuit of a guntotting sexual sadist. However, the weaving together of politics and family tensions makes for a gripping saga. Even the slow revelation of Eve's own tortured past achieves an emotional honesty that I would not have predicted at the start. An intriguing new series.
