‘Divided in Death’ by J D Robb
Published by Putnam. ISBN 0-399-15154-0

Long time and faithful readers of the In Death series will welcome the return of Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her enigmatic husband Roarke in this latest futuristic police procedural.

In Divided in Death Eve finds her loyalties severely tested once again when Reva Ewing, a valued member of her husband’s staff, is found standing over the dead bodies of her husband and her best friend. However, for Eve Dallas everything seems too cut and dried especially since her husband is working on a secret Government contract, this only adds to the mystery. For her it appears that Reva Ewing is being set up to take the fall for a double murder she didn’t commit. Dallas soon finds herself not only involved in a double homicide (with more murders taking place) but also techno-terrorists in the shape of a top level secret Government agency. To add to her worries is the fact that once again her past has come back to haunt her and this time it may destroy all she holds dear..

Anyone who has been reading the series for a long time will notice the subtle changes that have been taking places especially amongst the different relationships among the main protagonists. Eve no longer has the dependable Peabody as her aide, she is now her partner (albeit her junior partner), Peabody’s relationship with McNabb has moved on and Eve’s bond with her husband has grown. Eve is also becoming a lot more considerate and while she does not show a lot of humour in this book, it is certainly there.

Underneath all this what we still have is a good old fashioned police procedural and as usual Eve Dallas pulls out all the stops (both illegal and legal) to find the culprit. This is an intriguing tale and it brings into sharp focus the difficulties that arise when you have a rogue Government agent hell bent on revenge and inter-departmental rivalries. As usual in Divided in Death JD Robb has managed to combine all the elements that we have come to expect from her. My only gripe has nothing to do with the novel which I enjoyed immensely, but the fact that they are no longer paperback originals and with Divided in Death we have the first in the series to be published in hardback
