The Monks’ Table is a pub in the village of Ballyclarin, Ireland. Sister Mary Helen and Sister Eileen are over from San Francisco to experience the world-famous Oyster Festival. But their holiday is to prove not to be as restful as they anticipated. Sister Mary Helen has been caught up in murder investigations before and, when she finds a dead body in the ladies’ toilets, she can’t resist giving the Irish police the benefit of her – not inconsiderable – experience.
Written with gentle detail and an eye for the minutiae of life that makes for convincing pen-portraits of people and places, The Monks’ Table is a soothing read and just right for the long, lazy summer days ahead (I hope!).
