The body of Rachel Tenison, a wealthy West End art dealer is found kneeling in the snow. On the surface, Rachel had a normal fulfilled life, but investigation begins to show a different picture.
The investigating officers are DI Mark Tartaglia and DS Sam Donovan, both haunted by an earlier case. Their one hope for information and a picture of the deceased is Rachel’s friend Liz Volpe, but she is evasive and Mark senses that there is much that she could tell them if she chose to do so. Even more evasive and very prickly is Rachel’s brother Patrick Tenison., an MP.
Further investigation turns up a close relationship between Rachel and her boss. The tension and the relationships are taut and interesting. Slowly, as layer by layer is stripped away, we learn about the life of Rachel Tenison and the people that surround her.
Alongside the absorbing mystery is the personal life of Mark Tartaglia – his sister Nicoletta is always trying to fix him up with a girl, and his relationship (if one can call it that) with Sam Donavon is most interesting.
Did I enjoy this book, yes – am I eager for the next in the series? Very definitely YES.
