‘A Bitter Chill’ by Jane Finnis
Published by Poisoned Pen Press. ISBN 1590581938

A Bitter Chill is the second book in the series-featuring Roman innkeeper Aurelia Marcella. Everything appears to be peaceful. There is a forthcoming festival to look forward to, but everything changes when Relia’s brother (and nominal owner of the inn) turns up late at night with extremely bad news. The family seems to have lost Caesar’s good will and have fallen out of favour. To top it all not only is the inn is being threatened by a protection racket but a party of taxing travellers who are related to the provincial governor turn up in search of a missing heir. Their furious arguments spill out into Relia’s household with disastrous consequences.

A Bitter Chill is a welcome return to Aurelia Marcella and her family with this tale of missing heirs, a battle over wills, forlorn lovers and some rather ambitious criminals. This gripping historical crime novel is as convincing as it is enjoyable. Anyone who has a fondness for Rome, its life and its citizens must get pleasure from reading this latest book. The author has a spectacular knack of bring the livelihood of the town and inhabitants to life, to the extent that she has written a marvellous book that is worth savouring.

If you enjoy books set in this period then A Bitter Chill will certainly draw you in even further. Jane Finnis is certainly an author worth reading and I am certainly looking forward to the next book in the series
