Maybe for you or me disturbing a robbery while going to the deli for lunch and having your car blown up would be a major event, but for Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter, it’s all in a days work - and what’s another car when you‘ve already had several blown up underneath you anyway!
This episode however, has consequences, as Stephanie can identify the robber and becomes the target of a gang. It gets worse - they put out a contract on her and Junkman is the hired killer.
Her on/off relationship with cop Joe Morelli is currently off - he wants her to stay home and keep safe. Stephanie doesn’t do ‘stay home’. Ranger has left her his car and left town. What’s a girl to do - she can’t go home in case she leads the gang to her parents home - best try and find Ranger’s bat cave, she’s sure to be safe there -all she has to do is find it.
All the old gang are about; Lula toting her Glock and keen to use it at any opportunity, Grandma Mazur, sister Valerie who is getting married to Kloughn and the wedding arrangements aren’t going well. Until that is, Sally Sweet turns up, and Sally takes charge. Sally is a he by the way, and oh! up on an assault charge on account of someone taking exception to him wearing a dress. He has an interesting method of quitting swearing.
It’s great fun and well up to standard in the laughing out-loud stakes. Connie
who runs Vinnie’s office takes a more active role and we learn a lot more about
Ranger in this book, a little of the mystery drops away. Not sure if that is
a good or bad thing.
