‘Countdown Murder’
by June Drummond

When Dr John Thorneycroft is Christmas shopping in the elegant Bonbouche delicatessen he witnesses the collapse of a child who has eaten a Bonbouche confectionery. He acts quickly and getting the child to hospital saves the child’s life.  But this proves not to be a case of an allergic reaction but a case of poisoning and it is the first of many.

The next poisoning is fatal and John Thorneycroft is retained by the police as a forensic consultant.  But is the contamination of Bonbouche products random or a calculated campaign. Are the poisonings against the people who are effected, or are they directed at the family who own Bonbouche .  DCI Liam Connor finds interviewing the Lenard family difficult, they are clearly dysfunctional, also secretive and uncooperative.

This was one of those books that you have to sit up and finish even if you know that you have to get up for work the next morning and you need to call it a night – no way, I had to finish the book.

The characters were fascinating as was the mystery, although I did guess right, but it was more a guess than clever deduction. Recommened.
