Callie Anson begins her new job as curate to the Reverend Brian Sandford. She is pleased to be making a new start after the end of her relationship with Adam, to whom she was engaged to be married, but who sprung feet of clay on her at the last moment.

Aware that women in the clergy are still disapproved of, she is bolstered by the support of her friend Frances Cherry, but has no idea of some of the deep-seated hatred that still exists until she attends the Clergy Chapter meeting. Verbally attacked by Father Jonah Adimola, she is somewhat shaken - but no more so than by the report of his death by strangling the following day.

I have long awaited a new book by Kate Charles and I was not disappointed; it has all the intrigue and passion burning under the skin that I have come to know and enjoy from her pen. She is a master of the complex relationship. Hatred, revenge and passion - they are all there in the people that smile and present a cool and elegant facade. Kate Charles pens characters that I always want to know more of; she brings them so alive that I want to know what happens to them. Highly recommended. -------
