This is the fourth in the series featuring Brodie Farrell, single mother, who finds things, not people; she seeks out objects that her clients have been unable to locate themselves. She has a relationship with Detective Superintendent Jack Deacon of the local police force and a close friends relationship with Daniel Hood. This friendship is not always totally understood by Jack Deacon.
In the third book in the series, Reflections, Brodie and Daniel had a strong disagreement and this book follows on directly from that confrontation. Since that time she and Daniel have not spoken and he now seems to have completely disappeared. Despite their disagreement Brodie is surprised that he has left without a word to her - at first she is angry and then she becomes concerned when even her expert searching methods fail to produce his whereabouts.
Then a series of mishaps befall Brodie; first her car windscreen is smashed, then the car set alight, then her handbag is stolen. When Brodie receives a call from Daniel asking her to meet him at the local library and to come alone, she wonders if all the events are linked to Daniel, but refuses to believe that he would ever hurt her. But someone is trying to hurt her - and if not Daniel then who is it?
As with previous books in the series, people are not what they seem on the
surface. We learn more of Daniel Hood in this book. I still don’t take to Jack
Deacon, but I enjoy Brodie and the mystery kept me hooked to the end.
