Returning to work after the Easter break, Manchester based Private Investigator, Sal Kilkenny receives a call from Lucy Barker, who wants Sal to find out who is sending her hate-mail. Sal recommends that she contact the police, but Lucy is adamant that the police are kept out of it. Lucy is a hotel receptionist, so Sal starts her investigations with Lucy’s colleagues.
Her second case involves her least favourite occupation, surveillance. This on behalf of a couple who are considering a move to Didsbury . They want Sal to check out the area for nuisance neighbours or any criminal activity. Unfortunately, Sal’s first night of stake-out co-insides with arctic conditions.
Then the campaign against Lucy Barker escalates with some very nasty incidents, but Lucy will still not have the police involves and becomes almost hysterical when Sal suggests it.
Meanwhile on the home front her daughter Maddie is suddenly not keen to go to school. Very uncharacteristic. And her uncomplicated relationship with her house–mate Ray suddenly seems to be complicated. Juggling her home life and her job have never been easy, but things look set to cause her more stress than usual.
Continuing her boring surveillance work brings her into contact with violent crime. As she absorbs that, there are further surprises in store for her, in trying to be helpful she puts her life, and the lives of others at risk.
I always enjoy Cath Staincliffe’s writing, her cases are always interesting, usually with dramatic climaxes, and this is no exception it will have you on the end of your seat.
Julia Franklin, is for me Sal Kilkenny, she really makes her live, and greatly
enhances my enjoyment of the exploits of Sal Kilkenny. .
