I have not read, or listened to any of the Sukey Reynolds series before. In this latest book she has been promoted to DC on a team led by a grumpy DS Greg Rathbone.
Professor Lamont is late for a meeting at the Mariners Hotel with Dr Whistler, an archaeologist who has just returned from Greece. He finds Whistler, stabbed and lying in a pool of blood, the safe is open and a valuable document, claimed to be a letter from St Paul, is missing.
Suspicion lands on Lamont. He is short of money and when his sister confirms that he had a knife with him that morning, it looks like it's going to be a straightforward case. But Sukey has a hunch that this is all is not as it seems. Her instincts tell her it is all too simple: the victim was about to hand Lamont the St Paul document, so why bother to kill him for it? DS Rathbone has no time for her theories. Lamont is identified by an Albanian hotel worker as the man he saw leaving the hotel half an hour before he was due to meet with Whistler. We also discover that there were other valuable artefacts in the safe. When his sister, who is mentally disturbed, tells Sukey that it was her fault Stephen stabbed Whistler, things look bad for Lamont. But Sukey, is still convinced he is innocent and she continues to take an interest even after she's taken off the case.
I usually enjoy readings by Michael Tudor Barns but several of the characters sounded the same and I wasn’t always sure who was who at some points. But I am sure that fans of this series will greatly enjoy it..
