On a February night Eddie Malloy, ex-champion jockey falsely accused with involvement in a doping ring and having served an 18-month jail sentence, stumbles across a dead man on Newmarket Heath.
Some weeks later he is approached by McCarthy and made an offer on behalf of the racing authorities to discover the killer of Danny Gordon, the corpse he had found on Newmarket heath.
Although he had successfully tracked down Kruger, the man behind the doping ring, he is still bitter about the loss of his racing licence.
He is unwilling to help find the killer of Danny Gordon until he learns that the suspected person behind the murder is the man who had set him up five years previously. If he finds him and gets him to admit that he set Eddie up, Eddie could be exonerated and get his license back. But he has a hard and dangerous task ahead of him and the £600 per month retainer is hardly worth his life, which judging from the fate of three previous personages who have fallen foul of this organisation, is possibly what he is risking, but Eddie is fired by the opportunity to clear his name and recover his licence.
his is the third book in the series I have listened to read by John Cormack,
and I have enjoyed them all John Cormack is to me the intrepid Eddie Malloy.
