Stranded is a collection of short stories by Val McDermid. The stories encompass a diverse collection of different narrative voices. The collection certainly showcases that wide scope of McDermid’s talents. The stories range from nights of passion and revenge in St Petersburg, the sleazy underbelly of the publishing world and an author being drawn into the lethal enticement of cyberspace with surprising results. Stranded includes a story involving Kate Brannigan as well as stories from different continents and backgrounds.
Val McDermid has always been a very good storyteller and her stories always probe not only the motivation of those in the criminal underworld but also the reasons for crime, and its effects.
Both Vari Sylvester and Gordon Griffin are excellent in reading the stories. I think that the collection would not have been as enjoyable on audio if they had been read by only one person. Because of this, when you listen you are drawn into the vivid, dark world of events. If you like me enjoy short stories, then you should certainly listen to Stranded - you won’t be disappointed. Not only because the stories are so well written but also because they are read by two very good people.
