Read by Sean Barrettt.

When a man dies after using a cash machine late one night, the police are perplexed as to whether his death was due to natural causes or by another’s hand.

Then inexplicitly two young girls savagely attack a taxi driver. Inspector Kurt Wallender is appalled at their lack of remorse. So much so that he is accused by the girl’s mother of assault. In the light of the accusation, further interrogation of the girl is suspended, and before he can gleam any more information, the girl escapes.

At Ystad there is a power failure that plunges the city into total darkness. When the engineer arrives at the sub-station to investigate the cause of the malfunction, he makes a terrible discovery.

Although these are seemingly separate incidents, Inspector Wallander is convinced that the incidents are linked. His investigation is conducted under his discovery of betrayals in his own team, which heightens Kurt’s loneliness on top of his usual introspection. Wallander’s search for answers leads him into the shadowy world of anarchic terrorists and the anonymity of cyberspace.

There is no doubt that this is a chilling mystery. Yes, murder is always chilling, but the method employed by this group of terrorists is fascinating, bizarre and quite terrifying.

Sean Barrett is Wallander, and can make no mistakes in my book. His voice portrays the bleakness and brilliance that is Kurt Wallender.
