This is an intriguing book dealing with two births, two deaths and two marriages.

When Judy Hill gives birth to Charlotte prematurely, the planned wedding between her and DI Lloyd is put on hold, but Lloyd is thrilled with the birth of his daughter. On maternity leave from Stansfield police force Judy is faced with the decision of remaining at home or finding a nanny for Charlotte so that she can return to work. The latter, on investigation is not simple. Then when walking with Charlotte in the park she is witness to the kidnapping of a baby.

Meanwhile, Lloyd is called to the scene of a killing, and a critically injured man. When Teresa Black turns up at the hospital, she identifies the injured man as Ian Wearing, her ex-lover, who had moved in with Lesley and her daughter Caley.

The scene of crime is complicated with the sighting of Phil Roddam, Lesley’s ex-lover, and Dean Fletcher, imprisoned for child abuse, that of sex with underage Caley, but now out on paraole

A complicated tale of family loves and loyalties, which kept me guessing to the end. I will seek out other books in this series. But the final question is, will Judy and Lloyd finally marry? especially when it means that Lloyd will have to reveal his first name in front of so many of his colleges!

Julia Franklin did a wonderful job and I loved her welsh accent which brought Lloyd alive for me.
