Detective Petra Connor is working Hollywood Homicide solo. The seemingly random murder of young girl, whom no one comes forward to identify despite her unusual and distinctive trainers, has Petra baffled. On top of her caseload she has been lumbered with Isaac Gomez, a 22 year-old budding genius who is researching crime patterns for his thesis.
When Isaac haltingly tells her he has stumbled upon a series of seemingly unrelated deaths that have happened over a number of years, that all remain unsolved, he gets a lukewarm response from Petra. However, when he says that all the murders have been committed on exactly the same day, June 28, he does sort of catch her attention and she promises to look at his theory. But Petra has more pressing matters taking up her time, not least her secret love-life.
Eventually, her curiosity gets the better of her and accompanied by Isaac she starts to re-interview the victims’ families about these seemingly unrelated killings. As she conducts her investigations she becomes more convinced that these murders are linked, and if so there is a serial killer at large who will strike again on June 28th - and June 28th is less than a month away.
This was an intriguing mystery. In fact, two intriguing mysteries as both cases, the current and the cold case, have pretty twisted plots.
Jeff Harding was as ever terrific. His range of voices continues to amaze me.
I think Jeff Harding reading the shipping forecast would have me enthralled.
