Read by Peter Wickham

When DI Wesley Peterson attends the scene of the killing of Charles Marrick , he finds a body drained of blood, and a long list of suspects, for Charles Marrick proves not to have been a popular man.  Investigation uncovers scams that could be  motive for murder.  But the real mystery is how Charles Marrick allowed himself to be murdered as there are no signs of resistance. When a second murder is committed, only the method of killing appears to link the two victims, for the second victim was well-liked, so Wesley must find the connection.

As with all the books in this marvellous series,  there is a second mystery  running concurrent with Wesley’s investigation, for his archaeologist friend Neil Watson has been receiving a series of anonymous letters about unpleasant events at a medieval abbey.  Neil tries to investigate the matter himself as he thinks that the letters may be connected to the dig which has a number of volunteers, and some people who have paid to work on the dig - could they have signed up with a specific plan in mind.

The discovery of a third body points to a connection to the past  - could the author of the letters and Wesley’s killer be one an the same. For both Wesley and Neil there is a shocking revelation.

Peter Wickham is excellent in his portrayal of Wesley Peterson.
