Out of the Dark is the latest in the series featuring barrister Trish Maguire. When an eight year old boy is knocked over by a skidding car as he is running out of the dark to find Trish Maguire one wet Sunday night, her name is found on him by casualty as they fight to save his life. Who is this young boy? Trish knows he is not her son but the police are convinced that he must be. Still trying to recover from a miscarriage and with her partner George far away, this is a matter that she must deal with herself. On top of all this she is heavily involved in a case that could change her whole career. Trish finds herself taking charge of the boy and in an attempt to find his identity she becomes drawn into a world that makes her confront her own fears that she thought she had left behind. Added to the heavy burden that she is already trying to deal with is the fact that her unpredictable father is the chief suspect in a rather brutal murder. Trish soon realises that there are choices to be made if she is to resolve the mess that is surrounding her.
Annie Aldington is well known for reading audio books and is brilliant at interpreting
the books as they should be. In this case, with Out of the Dark she has shown
why she is amongst the best. I read this book when it was first published, but
listening to it being read by Annie Aldington reminded me not only why I enjoyed
it so much, but also the fact that if a book is narrated properly, then it will
draw you in right from the start. This was an excellent reading of the book
and her accent and voice were just right for the various characters. If you
haven’t read the book, then try and get hold of the audio version it is just
as gripping and you won’t be disappointed.
