Jack Reacher, a man with no job, no ties, and no permanent address - his only luggage a folding toothbrush hitches his way into Colorado where he encounters the town of Hope, the following day he enters the next town Despair, just twelve miles further on. He wants a cup of coffee before he again hits the open road, but the diner in Despair won’t serve him, they tell him in no uncertain terms that he is not welcome in Despair, and he must move on. Reacher doesn’t take kindly to this and makes his point by resisting the attempts of the DPD to remove him from their town.
Retrenching back to Hope he meets Detective Vaughan of the HPD, who is waiting at the town limits to give him a ride back to Hope. But telling Reacher to move on just spikes his curiosity and he determines to discover just what the inhabitants of Despair are hiding.
The perfect Reacher adventure – one man against the whole town, all determined to keep him out. But why, just what are they hiding.
It kept me guessing to the end and I enjoyed it, but I have enjoyed some of the earlier books more, but yes, I will still be avidly waiting for the next adventure of Jack Reacher.
Jeff Harding – what can I say, he is the best. He is the only reader who can do both male and female voices totally successfully. And his range for all the characters continues to amaze me. As ever Jeff enhanced my enjoyment of the book.
